Brazil to develop mining development planning 2050
This week, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Brazil's Ministry of Energy and Mining held its first working meeting with the National School of Public Administration (Enap, National School of Public) to listen to the opinions of relevant parties on the National Mining Plan 2050 (PNM).
According to the BNAmericas website, the Brazilian government has launched a series of studies on mining planning in 2050 to provide guidance for mining development.
This week, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Brazil's Ministry of Energy and Mining held its first working meeting with the National School of Public Administration (Enap, National School of Public) to listen to the opinions of relevant parties on the National Mining Plan 2050 (PNM).
"The plan will establish guidelines and long-term goals for the development of the Brazilian mining industry from 2022 to 2050, indicate the direction and propose solutions. The plan will replace the PNM2030 issued in 2011," the Ministry of Energy and Mines said in a press release.
One demand from private companies is for the government to develop a strategy to diversify the mining industry away from its current over-reliance on iron ore.
"We need long-term policies and strategies to attract investment in the development of more mining projects, including copper, nickel, lithium and cobalt production, to meet the needs of clean energy development," said Miguel Nery, president of the Brazilian Association of Mining Companies.
However, it is warned that the long-term planning of Brazil's mining industry also requires environmental measures, as investors around the world are increasingly concerned about this.
"Half of the mining projects require effective regulatory mechanisms to determine whether minerals are taken from protected areas. Without these measures, it is impossible for future projects to be funded," said Larissa Rodriguez (Larissa Rodrigues), project manager at the Escoras Institute (Instituto Escolhas), a sustainable development NGO.
